Robert John is a research associate and PhD candidate in Geography at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg. His research project “Marketization of sand in Cambodia: global networks, conflicts and materialities”, funded by the German Research Foundation, analyses the establishment of new markets for construction sand and its spatio-temporal effects. Next to highlighting the unique features of sand geography, he puts a focus on the material foundation of the built environment and its central role in the global economy.
