System of Systems
System of Systems is a research platform examining the bureaucratic, spatial, and technological infrastructures that shape displacement and migration in Europe. Working collaboratively with activists, artists, policy experts, and academics, the project analyses how nation states and the European Union deploy complex and overlapping systems – ranging from data regimes and logistics to border externalisation and extraction economies – to produce, manage, and control migration.
Initiated in 2016 by Rebecca Glyn-Blanco, Maria McLintock, and Danae Io, System of Systems operates through publications, exhibitions, public programmes, and a digital platform. Its ongoing anthology series, Managing Displacement (distributed by Antenne Books and IDEA), brings together interdisciplinary research and practice addressing contemporary migration governance. The first two essay collections, [1] Outsourcing and [2] Extraction, examine respectively the externalisation of Europe’s borders and the role of extractive economies in producing and intensifying forced displacement.
